A New Plant-Based Probiotic to Keep Your Pet Happy and Healthy

On April 29, 2019, Dr. J.J. Lin, chief scientist of Imagilin® Technology, LLC, presented a workshop on the Petfood Forum 2019. This workshop, titled “Probiotics freeze-dried products as functional pet treats or as functional ingredients for pet foods,” presents information on the new probiotic Pediococcus acidilactici NRRL B-50517 (PA5051®) and how it can be easily added to freeze-dried pet products. This plant-based, non-spore forming probiotic is exceptionally resistant to high temperatures (up to 185° F) while also being resistant to stomach acids. These characteristics let live PA5051® reach the gastrointestinal tract so that it can have an effect on the body. Results even showed that the probiotic is tolerant to antibiotic treatments as well. Effects on the immune and digestive system were also seen after PA5051® was administered to humans and animals. PA5051® can continue to stay alive when stored at room temperature and still maintain its features of resistance to high temperatures and stomach acids, and tolerance to antibiotics. Lin’s workshop, dogs and cats with these effects were administered PA5051® and results showed a boost in their immune response and a reduction of pro-inflammatory biomarkers after a 3-month period. Freeze-drying products (like meats, fruits, and vegetables) allows the food to retain most of its flavor, color, and texture. This process also keeps the nutritional value of the food with minimal processing involved. PA5051® can even be prepared in different sizes, giving it the flexibility to be used in specialized pet treats or just as an ingredient in pet food as stated in Dr. J.J. Lin’s workshop. The PA5051® freeze-dried products showed the same characteristics of PA5051® in the resistance to the treatments of high temperature, strong acidic environment, and various concentration of different antibiotics. This makes PA5051® the choice of probiotic to be used in freeze-dried products for pets.
